The internal maze of the market in Fortaleza, feels a bit like an MC Escher drawing!

3 September:
Got to the hotel at 7am and luckily could check in and have a lovely shower after our night bus.  The hotel is on a very noisy street, but luckily the aircon generally blocks out the noise!  We´re only a block back from the beach, and about a 20 minute walk to the centre.  Jose took us on a mini city tour, but not an awful lot here really.  Saw the main church and the big central market - it´s about 4 floors of tourist tat, brilliant!  Melissa found a great pair of rainbow thongs (or flip flops for any non-Aussies!).  They´ll be fun for the rest of the trip, and then we´ll see if they actually last any longer.  Also got a pair of board shorts for R10, so didn´t do too badly today.  Walked back along the beach (not recommended unless you´re in a group) and had the best cold coconut of the trip so far - lovely flavour and icy cold.

The metropolitan cathedral in Fortaleza, made of cement.
Sat by the hotel pool (or rather, bathtub) for the rest of the day, having a few rum and cokes and got pizza for dinner - most enjoyable.

4 September:
Not much to do today.  Went back to the central market and got some presents for people, and a bag of caramelized cashew nuts for tomorrow´s bus trip - if they last that long!  Watched a tear-jerker movie on TV this afternoon (after had lunch in the market with a few of the others we met there), then sat around the pool again for the evening.  Another GAP group arrived today, and gave us lots of information about the things we´re going to do shortly (they´re coming the other way).  Looks like we´re going to lash out and do both the Manaus jungle trip and the Angel Falls trip - they said the Angel Falls trip is fantastic.  Unfortunately got an email from Melissa´s dad tonight saying that her mum tripped on a hose and broke her lower leg, needs to get a plate put in.  They were about to head off on a trip to Europe for 6 weeks, combing attending their nephew´s wedding and doing a tour of Eastern Europe, so looks like the old travel insurance will actually be called upon this time.  Will take a couple of months to come good, so will have to take it easy.
