This was an 8 month overland extravaganza - from Peru, working around in a loop to Venezuela via Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Some was on GAP Adventures trips, other sections were independent - our biggest trip yet! Highlight was Melissa getting to visit her Uruguayan host family, from her year as an AFS exchange student in 1987 - the first time we'd been together in 21 years! (Also a fabulous 4 days in LA on the way home, shop away!)

Cordoba

The McBus for our Cordoba city tour, an old London Routemaster.

Arrived in Cordoba early this morning and got a taxi to the Hotel Victoria, which is in the pedestrian precinct of the city centre.  It turned out to be cheaper than what we´d though from the internet, so that was a bonus.  Being a Sunday, very little is open in Cordoba so we took the McDonalds City Tour bus for 1 1/2 hours to get an overview of the city.  We look at the the Cabildo in Plaza San Martin ourselves - most of the rooms were closed up, but we could walk through the underground chambers, which apparently were used as police cells at one stage.  The tour took us through the neighbourhoods of Nueva Cordoba, Rogelio Martinez and General Paz (as well as the centre), and past many lovely old buildings - they have been maintained/restored quite nicely here.

City church spire against the lovely blue sky, Cordoba.
Drove through the parque Sarmiento and got a good view of the city from the lookout at the top and stopped at the Iglesia Sagrado Corazon de Jesus.  This church was built in the early 1900s and has some incredible decoration and carvings.  The interior has lots of painted designs, and the outside is covered in columns and statues.  The colours would have been amazing when first done, but quite faded now.  A few monks still live next door.

After the bus trip, we stopped in at the tourist information, where a very helpful young man gave us lots of ideas for the next couple of days.  Had lunch at Las Tinajas, apparently the biggest all you can eat in Argentina!  The selection of food was astronimical, and they even had a small river running through the dining room!  The quality was excellent, and at 66 pesos for the both of us including wine, quite good value.  Went home to try and get a good night´s sleep, because not so good on the bus.
