Another day in the sun (sort of)
The sun did shine tody, just took a little longer to come out. Was quite overcast in the morning, but had fined up by lunch time. First stop today was the Archaeologicl Museum where we saw our first shrunken heads and a large moai from Easter Island which has been set up in its own room with a terrific explanation of Rapa Nui culture and life. We also managed to get ourselves into a documentary on northern Chile being filmed at the museum, we just had to wander around a whaling raft looking very interested for a few minutes. Think we did a good job, so could be a new career there for us!
Then walked down to the Plza and checked out the Regional Museum (included in the Archaeological Musuem ticket) which is found in the old house of ex-president of Chile Gabriel Gonzalez Videla and has a lot of personal mementos from his time as president, plus a gallery of Chilean artists and an historical section about La Serena.
Quite an interesting little museum, especially the presidentil items such as diplomatic passports and clothes of the era.We walked down to the lighthouse on the coast for a quick look at the beach, and then met up with HJ for lunch at local student cafe. Enjoyed a delicious seafood lasagna here, and Noel had the best roast pork and chorizo sandwich ever, the fries were also excellent! Had dinner tonight at a seafood restaurant over the Mercado - it was expensive, but not as much as you´d pay in Australia and with huge amounts of seafood. Our waiter looked like a young Jerry Lewis, and looked after us very well. (Also got two round of free drinks, so we´re not complaining!)
Noel continued the night at local bar with some of the group, just shows that all you need is a pitcher of beer and a video jukebox to keep him happy! (Melissa went home to bed to nurse the cold she seems to have caught from noel!)
