The city of Erfurt

Today we didn't want to go so far to do something so we decided to stay right where we are, well a little bit of a car ride was involved. The city of Erfurt is where my dad lives now. His girlfriend is from here so she was able to show me a bunch of things in this city.
Since Erfurt used to be in East Germany and in general things did not get renovated much during the Cold War I was able to tell the difference to growing up in West Germany. Lots of graffiti and a lot of the old buildings looked like no one had lived in them for years. Close to where my dad lives there is an old factory building, which is really not a pretty sight, but since it is so old, they can't tear it down. It's an eyesore really, but it would also cost way too much to renovate and rebuild the existing building.  That aside....
The parts that are renovated are beautiful! The Erfurter Dom is very famous and was renovated a few years back. The Oldtown of Erfurt is nicely done as well. We climbed a clock tower near the Kraemerbruecke, which is a bridge with buildings on it. It was built in 1325 and still inhabited. The view from up there was gorgeous! A few blocks from here another abandoned building in the middle of town. A huge ruin which was probably a church in its better days. (Sorry, I did not do my homework on this one).
People like Martin Luther went to the University of Erfurt in the 1500s.
