We parked the car and started our hike towards whatever it was my dad came up with. Turns out that we were about to see one of the castles that we saw a miniature of earlier this day. Schloss Altenstein!
Schloss Altenstein is located on 160 hectares of land, turned into a beautiful park. The castle itself was built around 531 and has a long history of being used to aid the villagers around the area and being used by very important people.
We explored the park first and came across a gave, which we had to walk through. We saw a few old bomb holes from World War II in the middle of the woods and walked past a small family cemetery which belonged to a Herzog that used to live at Schloss Altenstein.
So backtracking the way we came we decided to take a short cut which involved more or less climbing a steep hill. We finally made it to an open area with green grass and benches along the road. From here we got our first glimpse of the castle. As we got closer we noticed that they were doing renovations on the castle itself and that it was not open for visitors. Well, whatever I got to see a waterfall and that was nice. The garden around the castle was also very nice. Lots of flowers and a couple of statues.
After we circled the castle once we hiked back to the car and went on our 1 1/2 hour drive back to Erfurt.
