Herrenchiemsee, one of the islands with its beautiful castle. Built by King Ludwig II.
Located just off the autobahn A8 (Munich - Salzburg) Lake Chiemsee and the surrounding area will no doubt impress you. It's beautiful and fun all year around. You can rent boats in the summer and jump in the always cool lake. Or you just hop on one of the many ships that will take you to either the Fraueninsel or the Herreninsel, or even both if you arrive early enough. These boats leave mainly from Prien am Chiemsee which is a beautiful little town on its own. There's a nice waterpark here with indoor and outdoor activities. So why not sit in a hot tup outside and look over the snowy lake and near by mountains. The Fraueninsel is the smaller of the two islands. There is still to this day a convent on this island. In December you can visit the Christmas market on the island which is very famous in this area. Try some of the Gluehwein (heated wine with spices), it's delicious! Since this island is pretty small you can take a stroll around the whole island without getting too tired.
Lake Chiemsee and the "Herreninsel" island
There's a few nice restaurants where you can sit outside and enjoy the sun with a cool beer. On the Herreninsel, the big island, you can either walk or take a horse carriage to one of King Ludwig's castles that he had built here. Schloss Neuschwanstein was also built on his orders and is probably more popular and known then this one. None the less the Herrenchiemsee Schloss or castle is still worth the trip. There are guided tours in different languages and if that's not your thing there is plenty more to see around the castle. I especially like the beautiful big fountains that are right outside the main entrance to the castle. The inside of the castle has recently been restored for visitors. If you want any more information just check out the website for Lake Chiemsee.

I know. Having lived there for so long and not getting to see that view every day is the hardest part of being away from home besides friends and family.
