I fly from Washington to London on the 7th of January and then...

Leaving the UK like the Invasion Force

I arrived in Portsmouth, UK this morning on the train, about 1.5hrs.  I have a ferry ticket that leaves at 3:30pm today for Caen, France, the crossing will take 6 hours.  I wanted to do the crossing of the English Channel like the Invasion force on D-day June 6, 1944.  It's actually way out of the way that most people get to France, you can cross further north at Dover, UK where its only 1.5hrs.

The English and the Canadians left out of Portsmouth and the Americans left alittle further south but they all met in the middle of the channel before the invasion.  We will arrive just as the invasion did, except of course, we will be at a port and not right on the beaches.  The seas are expected to be rough today (5'-8') because of high winds. The allies had rough seas to deal with but they were also getting shot at, so I should get along alittle better.  I have a great uncle that died at Normandy and is buried there so I want to try to find his grave site.  I'm actually kinda ready to leave the UK.   If I get called "Mate" one more time...

Been there...at Omaha Beach and the cemetery in Normandy. Words can't adequately describe the depth of emotion one feels when looking out on the rows of meticulously groomed graves/crosses. It was so eerily quiet. Visiting the site made it real. I hope you can locate your uncle's cross. And, watch out for the wild boars. On a brighter note, are you sampling some unpretentious, fine French wines...maybe sitting outside at one of the cafes looking very cosmopolitan in your beret and drawing on one of those little brown cigars? (Get a picture! You know how envious I am...the wine part, not the smokes!) Pete wants me to tell you that we filled up "Quandary" with diesel on Thursday, to the tune of $3.54 a gallon...50 cents more than the last time. Ka-ching. Ka-ching. (Don't let this dampen your "spirits." Pun intended.)Will be anxious to hear about Paris. I think I just got a little greener. Godspeed.

Glad to hear you're taking the same route as the invasion. I hope you can find your uncle's grave. You should take flowers or something.
