I've been to Lithuania a number of times, but for this blog I'll talk about when I was there from December 27, 2006 until January 10, 2007. Then again from December 30, 2007 until January 02, 2008. That makes two New Year's Eves in two consecutive years. :D

...and a meal before heading home

We ate at Vienkiemis in Kretinga, serving traditional Lithuanian food in an “Old Lithuanian” atmosphere.  I particularly liked that on their English language menu their slogan was "Village cottage wonders for your belly to our purse" ... I love it! =D

Traditional Lithuanian style cuisine in a traditional atmosphere, the wait staff is dressed in traditional Lithuanian dress from the 1800s (sorry to use the word “traditional” three times in one sentence, but that’s the best way to describe what is going on in this restaurant!). Just a short drive from Palanga (10-15 KM) this is a good spot to try Šaltibarščiai, cold beet root soup (maybe better known in the states as “borscht”), a very common soup in Lithuania, notable for its pink color. Additionally you can get any number of meat dishes including pork, chicken and beef. Of course beer (alus) and vodka (degtine) are available.

I need to go back! My Lithuanian food experience was pretty negative... But I'm sure it's great if you manage to go to the right place. Maybe I'll make it to this place, three times traditional!! ;-)
