It is an area less traveled by foreigners, neither on the top of domestic travel ranking. However, because its isolated character, the traditional life of ethnics is well preserved, compared with Yunnan area. Also, the karstic environment blessed the region with breath taking scenary and mild weather. I've traveled through the eastern part of this beautiful land in late August 2007.

Ticket canceled!?

After meeting with my parents in Harbin, I decided to use the rest 2 weeks for a visit to this area.
There was no direct flight from Harbin to its capital city Guiyang, so I had to change a flight at Chengdu.
I planed to fly directly to Tongren, the east-most town, and travel backward to the west.

Guizhou is said to be one of the most isolated area in China.
The area is covered by karstic mountains and forests, rivers running through valleys with cliff on both sides.
People built towns and villages on the narrow, isolated, riverside plains, which made traffic a big problem.
Even now, there are only 2 rail roads pass the area.
Busses connects most places, but the time talbe could be useless when its raining, because many roads has not been paved.
However, you can find the untouched China in here.
Cow, horse, sheep, chicken, duck...all these farm animals could be seen around, walking, playing relaxed in the midst of rice field.
Farmers ware a bamboo hat to protect them from rain and sun shine.
You can see those hat dotted in the green fields, careing their rice and corn.
Sometimes there are people of Myao tribe wareing traditional black and purple cloths even for farm work.

After arriving in Guiyang airport, I went to the transit counter.
But when I asked about the ticket I booked for Tongren at the next morning, the clerk told me that my ticket has been canceled.
I couldn't believe my ears.
So I called the air carrier, and got the reason.
They told me that a rescue team had to go to Tongren by the flight, to save people buried under a bridge collapsed there.
In the case, the company canceled several tickets includes mine.
I've heard about the news of that collapsed bridge, but it was a surprise that I was taken in on it.

The only thing I could do was to book a flight on the next day, and find a room in the airport hotel.
Though, fortunately, I found a friend living in Guiyang to spend the next day.

Prices:
a single room at the air port hotel was about 240RMBs

I spent 2 nights in the hotel.
A single room with breakfast was 240RMBs.
The room was clean, with air conditioning, TV, 24h hot shower, towels.
The break fast has been served at the restaurant, on the ground flore.
The menu was totaly Chinese, rice porridge, steamed bread, Chinese sausage etc.
I was speaking Chinese, so I dont know if the employees can speak English.
But, thinking of that it is the only hotel for the airport, they should be.
