Off the Coast of Alaska
We were told that we would be nearing the coast of Alaska and would be able to see the shore. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, I didn't get to see anything. The next day though, things cleared up and we were able to see the mountains. Maybe its because I'm from southern California, and lived in Texas for so long that mountains are still awe inspiring for me. They do it every time and these certainly did it for me then.
I wasn't accustomed to how late the sun goes down so far north. It went down after 11 or 12 (midnight) and stayed right below the horizon for a weird twilight until about 3 or 4 in the morning when it would come back up. I'm sure it's nothing new for some folks who live far north or have been up there, but for me it was pretty cool to experience for the first time.
I hope someday to be able to get to know Alaska's landscape better and on a more personal level. It does have an appeal that I can't quite place and it would be nice to set foot and stay awhile.
