Karlovy Vary
January 7, 2008
Its time to do a proper Blog Entry for Karlovy Vary as well.. I arrived in Karlovy Vary pretty late at night and decided for a hostel i found Online. The "Quest Hostel and Apartments" should , at least according to lonely planet and the web offer accommodation from 300kc and still being located pretty central. Well , the price was 500kc , but it was SOOO worth it (Read at the bottom of the page)
Karlovy vary (Karlsbad in German) is the biggest and the oldest of the old spa towns. The Architecture is amazing and when i was walking from the bus station and down the river I was thinking "God am I glad that i came here , instead of skipping it". Walking down the river is an amazing experience , especially at night when there are many outdoor cafe's and bars. Many of the buildings are also lit up and it seems like there is a castle on on a nearby hill you can spot from the stroll down the river. There are still many spa, translated Lazne , but today they are practically medical institutions. I went into the Lazne 3 and had a coffee at the cafe there, just to get a glimpse at the old spas.
The Space Quest hostel and Apartments is located at the top of Moravaska. Its a pretty steep hill up from the main strip, but nothing you cant handle. When i arrived the door was closed and i called the number on the door. 10mins later somone came and unlocked the door and gave me a key. As i soon found out i was THE ONLY guest there, meaning that I had an ENTIRE 6-bed apartment all for myself. With a fully functional Kitchen , Bath Tub, Cable TV and all the other things you need. Great!
The 2.nd day I also walked upto the Diana Tower. I was planning to take the Diana Funicular up to the Diana Lookout tower, but since the funicular was closed i decided to walk up by myself. The scenery was nice, but nothing compared to the scenery i have available home in Bergen. At the middle station of the funicular i decided to jump over a gate and walk up in the tracks of the funicular. It seemed like a perfect idea until i saw the signs that it was illegal to do so. Since everything was closed i guessed that people wouldnt mind. I reached the top , Jumped into the Top station where two people just stared at me and looked as angry as they could. I pretended like nothing and took a picture of them , and just jumped over the gate and out of the station again.
I crossed a fence and escaped into the wild , feeling very pleased that they didnt try to follow after me. After a much deserved cigarette at the top with one of the guards I found out that the Diana Tower was closed and decided to walk a different path down. I chose number 17 which would take me to the Karl Marx Monument. I didnt see the Karl Marx Monument, but i did see several other monuments and a huge mansion tucked away in the forests around Karlovy Vary.. Before i headed down towards the town..
Another reason why people call me the crazy Norwegian, I found a statue facing the river and decided to climb up and hug it. Both Locals and tourists where probably discussion if i was crazy , mad or just a common lunatic. I guess all of those assumptions are true ;) I headed down to the city , took a couple of beers at a pub and headed back to the Hostel. Not feeling like watching CNN about the American Primaries i decided to go out and try to get some people to party with, without really having huge expectations as the town was crowded with tourists.
I went down to the few bars i found. I found some students and invited all of them upto my apartment to have a party. I said "I have the location , an apartment with no neighbors, and if you get people and music we should have a real good party at our hands".. I went to the supermarket and bought tons of alcohol and just waited. The people came and we had a blast , through the entire night.. Czech people know how to party ;)
