My trip to the philippines in 2003-04 was amazing. I was born there but came to the USA at age 5. this was my first time back since! With all the countries I've been to who would have known that the country that spawned me would give me the biggest culture shock ever!

Back in the Motherland!

fishing adventures.. miles caught one!

Well it was long overdue....  My return to the motherland.  And oh boy was I excited.  On this adventure my cousin Miles and I go for a month long trip throughout the Philippines.  This journey shall start out at Reagan Int. Airport in DC and then a lil stop over in Detroit.  And in Detroit was where it all started; a cough, groggy throat...  Who knows?!  Well maybe a couple/few shots of tequila at the tequila bar there would help it out.   Ok now I'm a lil tipsy getting on the longest part of the trip, 18 hours from Detroit to Nagoya, Japan.  Well needless to say I slept good halfway through the trip but I woke up to the worst feeling I've every had.  I was warm all over and was feeling sick as a dog!  I woke up again to the captain announcing the final aproach.

As I looked around every other person had a surgical mask on.  OH NO!  We were flying into Japan (circa 2003), the epicenter of the bird flu pandemic!  AND I was sick as a dawg, did I tell ya?  I thought I was gonna be quarantined and thrown into a pit and burned.  Somehow I got on our last plane from Nagoya to Manila (about 3-4 hours).  It just sucked!  We arrived at Manila's Aquino International Airport really early in the morning.  From there we had to take a cab to the local airport which would fly us about an hour to Bacolod City Domestic Airport.  Man that was a grueling trip!  And to have the flu on top of it!  I'm lucky that I'll be in the Philippines for a full month (Dec.

When we got to Bacolod the smell of foriegn soil was everywhere.  I don't know if I took in all the scent (I had the flu after all).  You know how you arrive at a different country, or even a different region of your own, you can smell it.  The scent of it smelled like there was something burning all the time.  I mean like grass and wood.  Then my scenses start to melt together.  The sight of familiar make of vehicles, but unfamiliar models only available there.  Then you see chickens just running wild (or just escaped from thier owners).  You see various vendors on the side of the street selling food, cigarettes, and other stuff.  Then you look beyond all that, beyond the buildings and the airport and you see nothing but the country side.  This was not Metro Manila.  This is not the countryside you see next to open fields in your town.  This are nothing but raw fields and patches of trees and then the bay or ocean...  Wow, this was awesome.  I was in my country and in my country I was in awe.
