The Beijingers (myself, Inga, Shangin, Simon, BBC Mike, Martin, Piotr, Fergus and Paranoid Mike) had discussed meeting up for a much needed night out following our first week away from UIBE. Simon had suggested we stay at a hostel he heard about called The Sleepy Inn, near Houhai Lake. It was a little tricky to find, but when we eventually stumbled across it, we checked in to what was a very clean and comfortable room AND a bargain at ¥80 (£5.30) a night.
We had a few beers at the hostel whilst waiting for all the crew to arrive, and then headed to Houhai for dinner and drinks. Solaro and Fi later joined us at a salsa bar, which was great fun as I was able to get a good dancing fix. I think it was here that Inga maybe had one too many Long Island Ice Teas and had to be put in a cab home.
We then headed to San Li Tun, otherwise known as bar street. I’m not a huge fan of this area of Beijing. It’s full of tacky bars packed with ex-pats and western tourists. Definitely not where you’d head if after a classy night out, but definitely THE place to go if you want cheap beer and kebabs at 3am!!
We eventually made it back to the hostel at 5am. It was a really fun night out and a great opportunity to let off steam after a week of real work!
The next morning (or rather afternoon) we all woke up feeling a little worse for wear, and the group decided to head to the Silk Market. Somehow on route, I managed to put my neck out. I was in agony so it really wasn’t a fun afternoon for me. I managed to quickly get what I wanted " a pair of shoes for teaching and a new superman t-shirt to replace the mud stained one bought a couple of weeks before " and then Inga and I headed to Wanfujing so I could get some much-needed Ibuprofen!
We then headed back to Miyun and had a chilled out evening as we needed to be up quite early the next day for the Teachers’ Day Prize Giving.
