augusta treverorum - city of emperor augustus in the land of the treveri
December 25, 2007
treveri is an ancient region in central europe bodering countries of today : belgium, france, luxembourg and germany. emperor augustus conquered the land and built a stronghold called "augusta treverorum" (city of augustus in the land of the treveri) in the latin times is now known as the city of trier in germany. due to its close proximity to the francophone countries, it is also known as tréves in french. the mosel river (moselle in french) flows into the city and which flows also into metz in france. the area of germany is best known for its vineyards and the "riesling" wine which comes from white grapes and produced only in few countries in europe.
it is the oldest city in germany dating back to more than 16th bc. many roman artifacts were excavated throughout the old city and the largest of all roman ruins is the "porta nigra" (black gate) as the city was important to the holy roman empire, it was also very prominent in the middle ages. in the center of the old city are large squares and plazas and some are used to burn witches in the stakes and torture criminals in public.
it was -5 °c and really cold because of the "wind-chill" and turning dark and starting to freeze and the light is fading and its only 4pm. i decided to turn back but thank god i captured some shots of the city as my camera is not good in the dark as it hardly captures light from darkness.
