Travelling solo in Thailand and Cambodia for Christmas and New Years 2007/2008. Crocs, bat caves, waterfalls, kayaks, helmetless moto riding, and some of the prettiest sunsets and sunrises ever.

NYE in Bangkok

After the temple, I took a tourist minibus back to Bangkok for just a few more dollars than the public bus. My friend had given me a hotel reservation that she couldn't use, so for one night I got to stay at a "nice" hotel with a real western bathroom, with a tub and a shower on a separate floor space from the toilet. The bathroom was awesome, but staying in Kho San wasn't so great for other purposes. There was a big "party" going on, but it was rather generic -- people drinking, etc. The fireworks were really distant and didn't last too long. The hotel, though very comfortable, was all into ripping people off (see review below). So all in all, I really just wanted to go to sleep, especially since I had to be up at 4AM for a flight to Chiang Mai the next morning. I walked around until midnight, but as far as nightlife goes, New Year's 08 was definitely no New Year's 07.

The Viengtai was by far the "nicest" place I stayed on my Thailand and Cambodia trip. My friend paid $80 for the double room and couldn't go, so I got the room for free (price may be inflated due to it being NYE). The room itself was great -- cozy, clean and with a real bathroom with a tub. Most showers in Southeast Asia, even in better budget to midrange options, are just machines installed in the toilet room, meaning you shower on the same floor surface as the toilet. The Viengtai's awesome bathroom was a welcome change. The location of the hotel is a block from Kho San Road, which came off as pretty tourist-trappy to me, but I didn't stay long enough to really form a concrete opinion.

So why is this a one star review? I have never felt so ripped off by a hotel. I got there after a long day, and they tried to tell me there was no reservation made by my friend. They eventually found it, but then tried to convince me they had given her a refund, when they had sent her an email telling her that they had a strict no refund policy. They tried to make me pay for the room all over again. It was 30 minutes before they finally gave in and gave me the room.

The next morning, I had to get a cab at 5AM. Cabs are supposed to be 200 baht, but the hotel colludes with taxis -- they sell the rides for 500 baht.

In short, staying at this hotel would be nice if you don't mind paying tourist prices for *everything*. I'm sure there are nice options with good rooms and nice bathrooms elsewhere.

I stayed at the Viengtai about 6 years ago - agree that the location is good and the rooms are quite nice, but from memory, it appears staff practices haven't changed!

Oh, most def. I had much better experiences with the people elsewhere, at places that weren't half as "nice" as this one.
