To explain why I've been wining about the cold so much, a little info first. You, the reader should know The Netherlands is a coastal country with a mild sea climate. This means that we don't have extreme teperature differences throughout the seasons, unlike a continental climate would. It has been almost a decade since it was this cold. Sure, we had some snow a couple of years ago but that vanished in two or three days. Besides, it wasn't cold enough to skate on natural ice. Now, the people are skating on lakes, canals and streams, like there is no tomorrow. Below pictures are from The Hague. Enjoy!
