There’s a famous saying that goes “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” I think Brazilian President Luis da Silva, Lula, as he is called, is the testament to this saying. Lula ran for President 4 times before he was elected. Talk about stamina and perseverance. I don’t know if I could do that. I have a lot of pride and it is not easy losing a national election. Campaigns in every country always consist of mud slinging, scandal, debate and many other arduous aspects. I do not think that I could stomach all of these things. Clearly, Lula can and has.

Now besides being determined, Lula also is intelligent. His approval and popularity rose each time that he ran for President.

Each defeat made Lula realize that he had to change. Whether it was his ideology or appearance, each subsequent run for election, resulted in some altercations to his campaign. He started out with 17% of the votes in 1989 and ended with 45% of the votes in 2002. Currently, experts are projecting that he will win 46% of the votes if Lula decides to run in the 2006 election.

So why and how has Lula been so successful? There are many reasons and factors that have impacted Lula’s path for presidency. For one, his appearance has changed. In 1989, Lula had somewhat of a straggly and haggard appearance. He had a long beard and disheveled look. He has progressively changed into what the Brazilians call “Lula Armani.

He's everywhere
” His look is much more tailored and poised. Lula’s win was also facilitated by political alliance with other groups. His party, PT (Partido dos Trabalhodores) formed alliances with other leftist and leftist center groups. Now, he has even made alliances with conservative groups to help him stay in power.

Another reason why Lula has been so successful is that his ideology and political position has gotten more and more moderate. He started his career as a radical leftist. However, he has gotten “softer” through the years. Many criticize this about him and call him a coward and a poser for changing his views. Now, it is personal opinion whether this is true. But people cannot deny that becoming more moderate has helped Lula significantly gain votes and approval from the Brazilian public and the international public as well.

Like many politicians, Lula has not been guilt free of scandal. His party has endured much turmoil with its members. Prominent PT members such as former chief-of-staff José Dirceu, have been accused of laundering money and taking bribes. However, Lula has managed to have his hands clean of these scandals. He has adamantly denied having any knowledge of any uncouth behaviors performed by his staff or party members.

How is it possible that the public believes Lula? Well, I have come to the conclusion that Lula is almost like Brazil’s Eva Perón. He is a man from the working class. Unlike most politicians, he is from a poor region of Brazil. Lula is not from a prestigious educational background nor has he lived an easy life. He has had to endure much struggle trying to make ends meet and has had tragedy in his life. His first wife died while giving birth to their son and Lula lost a finger when he was 19 in a factory accident. Consequently, the Brazilian masses can relate to him because to many people, Lula is one of them. Lula represents the Brazilian self-made man. He gives hope to many Brazilians who live in poverty and despair. He is a symbol of prospect and optimism. Tainting this image with scandal would be devastating to these people. This is much of the reason why Lula has been able to stay clean of the scandals of the PT.

Whether or not you are a supporter of Lula, you have to admit, Lula has impacted Brazilian politics. He may not be the greatest politician, but he has influenced the dynamics of the Brazilian political culture. However of course this has not been without much hard work and sacrifice. Lula has proven to us all that if we want something badly enough, we must be willing to give it our all and continuously work hard to obtain it. Consequently, my hat is off to you Mr. President. You truly embody the saying that the fourth time is the charm.
