The Gig
December 21, 2007
We met Melanie at a local bar where she performed some of her songs. John met us at Nina & Mike's and Tom was the designated driver. Chula Vista was about 20 minutes away.
On the way we saw a police sobriety checkpoint for traffic coming the other way. John had successfully passed thru it on his way to Nina's and warned us about it.
Melanie's friend started his show at about 9pm and kept saying that Melanie was on next. He was letting her take one of his sets that evening. About 10 of Mel's friends showed up and sat all around the front. We sat at a table about half way to the back of the little place.
After we sang happy birthday to Melanie (her 18th birthday) she took the stage with another friend of hers and sang 4 or 5 of her orignal songs plus a jazzy version of Oh Holy Night. A good time was had by all.
We returned back to the area where the checkpoint was and it was still there, so we turned a block early and cut thru a strip mall to avoid it.
