Final observations
Some final observations.
The entire trip could have been done easier and much more efficiently if we would have flown to Tuxla Gutierrez instaed of Villahermosa. Although flights to Villahermosa were much cheaper, we had to give ourselves an extra day to get back to this 'out-of-the-way' city the entire trip. Transportation being the way it was, we should have just gone to Tuxtla. This would have also allowed time to go to San Cristobal and El Sumidero as well as exploring more of the interior.
The Mexican bus system is amazingly efficient. There is a bus going anywhere you want to go. Ask alot of questions and you shouldn't have a problem.
Mayonnaise and jalapenos hurt me in my soul.
We regretably could not travel down the eastern border of Chiapas to enjoy some more local flavor. Our time didn't allow us to do very much. I'd recommend more than two weeks, to move around freely.
Hitchhiking is an option for short distances although I would not highly recommend it. If you need to though, my idea has always been to go for pick up trucks where you can ride in the bed. Avoid flat-beds.
