The trouble with onward travel in Vietnam is that many of the journeys are overnight trips. This leaves an awkward time gap between check-out of hotels (around noon) and catching the buses and trains, which typically leave in the late afternoon and evening. Hotels and hostels always have the facility to store bags for you but it's what to do with the time. Our solution has become the internet and beers.
We spent about three hours updating our blogs and finally managed to get some pictures loaded before having a bite to eat at the Kangaroo Cafe. A quick visit to the supermarket where we got some cheese spread for Adam, noodles, the sweetest tomatoes ever and some drinks. We then picked up our bags and set off to the train station. Our train departed at 7pm but being the early birds we are we arrived at 6pm. We bought some french bread and tiny clementines from the sellers outside then boarded our train.
To be honest we were a bit disappointed in the train. It was nowhere near as clean or comfortable as the sleeper we took in China. To make matters even worse our cabin mates both stank of BO. Talk about how to make a long journey even longer!! We did some reading played a few games of backgammon and feasted on our food which ate up a fair chunk of the journey then settled into a night of jolting, stop-start train action. Steph was particularly perterbed when in the middle of the night, the man opposite her had a coughing fit and actually hit her in the face with his phlegm. Nice.
