Chocolate Safari of Barcelona

When you think of fine chocolate you might think of Paris or the wonderful chocolaty cities of Brussels and Brugge. But Spain through the discoveries of Columbus in the 15 hundreds was the first importer of the cocoa bean to Europe and Barcelona seems to be making a strong move to come back to the top of the chocolate league with fabulous chocolates, bonbons and desserts.
Some of our favorite chocolate pits-tops in our recent visit to Barcelona were:
- Caco Sampaka
(a short walk form Laça de Catalunya in Barcelona) provide a wonderful
range of chocolates which include an exotic range of spices and herbs.
This echo's back to the original Aztecs who didn't use sugar to falvour
their chocolate drinks rather they used different spices including
Chocolate purists can sample the worlds chocolate with bars from Madagascar, Venezuela, Papua New Guinea.
- Bubo (Caputxes 10) near the Basilica Santa Maria del Mar in the old part of Barcelona. Hand made chocolate and desserts. I had a rich chocolate wedge that looked like a piece of modern architecture. We also tried their range of chocolates which are full of variety.
- Xocoa: (Petritxol 11) They are as pretty as they taste and not overly sweet but rather dry and taste of fresh ingredients.
- Xocolat Conveniently located in the La Boqueria Market La Rambla which is a must visit. Pick up some chocolates here before heading off to a well deserved coffee break.
It may be old but it has some of the freshest food and best range of ingredients I have ever seen.
It is primarily a meat and fish market with its central core being being a fabulous range of fishes in amazing shapes and colours. The market is lively with a mix of tourists and locals getting todays catch. The stall staff and are a colorful and they wield a mean looking fish knife.
If you think meat is something that comes from supermarkets. Of if all the fish you have eaten has been square and covered in batter. Then this market may comes as a bit of a shock. The animals on display are often whole and intact with their head, claws and feathers.
For the non-vegetarians this sight of animals in the raw is a bit of a wake up call. We sometimes like to forget that we eat animals and that they should be respected, treated well and have a decent life.
You can contemplate this and other topics over a good cup of coffee or even better glass of cava at one of the two cafes at opposite corners of the market.
Finally be sure to check out the wonderful range of fresh vegetables, cheeses and spices. If you want to make yourself a lunch on the go or cheap but wonderful picnic this is an excellent stop.
