We had an early
flight to Kota Kinabalu this morning to start our Borneo
holiday. At the airport we hopped in a taxi for the short ride to the Shangri
La Rasa Ria, except it didn’t turn out to be a short ride. In fact Rasa Ria
isn’t in Kota Kinabalu, it is 45’ north in Turan, which will make some of our
planned trips quite difficult.
Oh well, the
Rasa Ria is definitely worth it. Stepping out of the taxi we were welcomed in
with a gong and another man played a welcoming tune. We were then seated in the
lobby with iced tea while our bags and rooms were organised. The Rasa Ria is
enormous and the rooms are wonderful, with a private balcony view over the South China Sea. The gardens and the pools are
spectacular, so we had a wander around and a swim before lunch at the Terrace
Café (one of the five or so places to eat). After lunch we swam in the pool and
in the ocean, and had a pleasant laze reading our books. We had dinner in the
Grand ballroom, and then walked over to the Nature Reserve (the Rasa Ria has
its own 64 acre Nature Reserve full of rescued animals) for the nocturnal show.
We sat quietly at the reserve headquarters for an hour, and we saw something
that may have been a slow loris, and we definitely saw a large civet run halfway
down a tree in front of us and then jump onto another tree. Definitely a good
place for a holiday.
