The Lion brewery tour
I was planning to get up early to go on the 12.15 brewery tour. but then i went the wrong way at some point, and suddenly there was no way i was going to make to newmarket in time. so i went for a leisurly stroll in the right direction instead, and decided to go to the museum. The museum in Auckland is amazing! really cool maori and other pacific cultures on display, with everything from jewellery and clothing to big houses and a 25 meter war canoe. a canoe that seats 100 people! with intricate patterns carved into it. very impressing! wish i had many more hours to spend in there... but the beer was waiting for me :D

After a bit of walking and a bit of asking, since my lonely planet map doesn't cover this part of auckland in enough detail, i finally found the brewery.
The big tanks hold about half a million beer bottles, the small one only 375 000...

of course the doors were closed since i was about 30 min early, not taking any chances on the last tour during my stay. so i went to get a coffee across the street. sounds simple enough. but i had to walk for ages in the wrong direction to get to a lightcrossing, and there was waay too much traffic to cross anywhere else. of course this light crossing only had crossings on one side of the road, so i had to stand and wait for what seemed like at least five minutes, twice. just to get to the coffee across the street. but it was worth it, the coffee was very good, albeit a bit too hot for my poor tongue. good thing i burned the front part, and not the important bitter taste-buds i need for beer-tasting!

The best thing about ending up on this tour, is the other group who was there. A bachelor party. And the groom was marrying the barman's daughter, so we all got extended free beer time :) it's supposed to be about 30 minutes, we got over 80!  and since no one knew when it would end, we just kept drinking what we could. you could say we were far from sober when we got out of there, the germans headed straight for mcdonalds, and a much needed afternoon-drunk-snack... :)
