The trip to Big Corn Island
Woke up bright and early, 4:30 am, to get to the air port for the first flight out to Big Corn Island. This trip is hilarious, we don’t speak Spanish…thank god for my aunt Valerie who knows a tiny bit, enough to get us by.
After getting our tickers & getting weighted with our luggage we headed to the plane. It was a prop plane and it looked very odd, very tall. I’m pretty sure it was built when planes first came out, way back when…things were jimmy-rigged, it was like a fair ride. ;) They don’t really have much security like the States, it was nice. We got to sit where ever we wanted on the plane and when we stopped at Blue Fields to pick up more people the pilots came out of the cockpit, opened the emergency doors for fresh air and left the doors open to the cockpit as they left the plane. It was great to see all the gadgets in the cockpit, I was tempted to sit in the chair and have my mom take a picture of me. I slept the entire time on the flight to the island, it was surprisingly a smooth and quick flight.
Once we arrived and departed the plane we had a swarm of taxis to fight off, taxis are everywhere in Nicaragua! Our Realtor came in a golf cart and took us right to our very nice hotel right on the Beach, Arena’s Hotel. The drive to the hotel was very interesting, we got to see the island. It’s very dirty and there’s a lot of poverty. Skinny dogs, stray cats, trash and run down shacks. It wasn’t much of a good first impression. Our hotel though, put us in a wonderful state of mind. It’s very luxurious for a 3rd world hotel. I couldn’t complain a bit! The people are very nice and most of them speak a tiny bit of English. After a quick breakfast Gary, our Realtor, picked us up in us golf cart again and gave us a grand tour of the island. The island is only 4 miles square and takes about 20 minutes to drive around by golf cart. We stopped at many places along the way to have servasas (beers). We stopped at Casa Canada, a nice 2 year old resort style hotel. It was very nice but they best part was they had a cute little money there, tied up. I felt bad for him. He really wanted us to talk to him and give him something to eat. I was very tempted to pet him, he was co cute, but he probably had bad monkey intentions. I was sorry I didn’t have a treat for him.
After that Gary took us to his property he’s building on the island that’s for sale. It’s very cute. Still needs work before it’s finished but very “Nicaraguan” style. My family ended up buying the house which is very exciting! The property has many fruit trees, like star fruit, plantains, avocado and mango.
After the villa visit was continued on the tour. We stopped down from our hotel at this cute beach from restaurant called Picnic central. It was very good…mmm, fried chicken. Since our day was so busy we decided to take a nap in our cute bungalow. There’s a kitten that lives here at the hotel. She sits on my lap and purrs while begging for some of my food. She’s a scavenger and if you’re not careful she’ll rip your finger off while trying to take food.
It rained this afternoon, it felt very tropical and the sound of the rain hitting the tin roof is magical. One thing about being down here in Nicaragua is the sun, it’s so hot. There’s a huge temperature difference in the shade then standing directly in the sun.
For dinner we ate at our hotel restaurant. Gary bought us many drinks… what a way to live. I wish I could just stay here forever.
