Sunrise over the Atlantic from the air
Before going on this trip, I had never gone to Europe before, and had hardly travelled without my family. I remember talking about wanting to go on a trip with my best friend before we both graduated from the university, around January of that year. I had never really dreamed of going to Ireland, I have no Irish ancestory, but hey, it seemed like a fairly good idea and we got some pretty good deals from the student travel center. A third friend who was going to come along dropped out because "there are better things to spend money on than a trip to Ireland." Left needing to find a third person, I asked a girl from my nursing courses that I barely knew to come along and she said "sure!" None of us had ever taken a "big" trip by ourselves, first time in Europe, first time our of the country for Mary, but did we go on a tour, like all our "sensible" and well travelled friends recommended? Heck no! We didn't have the money for that kind of thing and we had our own plans...

Luckily, we all got along fairly well, and as we sat in the Newark International airport, for an eight hour layover (after getting lost in downtown Newark trying to find a bank...), playing Mad-libs and Go-Fish, it was only the second time the three of us had been together. The mere fact that a bunch of 20-somethings were happily playing Mad-Libs was a good sign. It was the beginning of a great travel trio, and an awesome trip (despite the fact that we were stuck in the Newark Airport)
