Leaving Rome
October 30, 2004
There weren't any cheap flights to Anglet, so I decided to take a
meticulously planned train ride (consisting of numerous transfers at
small stations) from Rome to the southwest coast of France.
Unfortunately, the success of the route hinged upon relatively short
transfer times, and my first train from Rome to the south of France was
delayed by over 3 hours. If there is a lesson to be learned here, it's
to never trust the efficiency of the Italian railway system.
I neglected to bring a train schedule with me, so it was interesting to replan my trip on the fly considering I didn't speak French and none of the various station attendants spoke English. It's amazing what a few frantic gesticulations and scribbles on a piece of paper can accomplish, though, and eventually I was redirected through various routes to my destination. I arrived in Bayonne (a larger city near Anglet) twenty-four relatively sleepless hours after my rail journey had begun.
