Great diving in Utila!!
October 16, 2009
Utila is renowned for its diving and there are lots of good dive sites to go to - we went to Lighthouse Reef , Black Coral Wall , Little Bight & Ted´s Point. Saw stingrays , parrotfish , pinfish , butterflyfish , groupers and a plenty of other types of fish (but no sign of the elusive whale shark which everyone is hoping to see this time of year) aswell as a couple of small wrecks , lots of cool coral and a huge rusty barbecue ! The island is pretty laid back with a Caribbean feel , only one small town , East Harbour, and most people are here for the scuba diving (and the associated nightlife). Frankly there's not an awful lot else to do after the diving so I'm staying for one more day to explore the island a little more - took a hike up to Pumpkin Hill which gives cool views over the whole island and went to the little beach which was OK but not particularly great.
Utila is seriously hot and I was frazzling here with my fair skin ... most days you´re dripping in sweat from 7.30 am onwards.... but the biggest annoyance is the insect life - I have so many bites from the supremely irritating mozzies and sandflies.
Saturday morning I'm getting up at the unearthly hour of 5:30 am to catch the early ferry back to La Ceiba and then the 7-hour bus ride down to Tegucigalpa , the capital of Honduras. Planning to spend a day or two checking out "Tegus" , as the locals call it , before I catch a bus onwards to Nicaragua later next week ... Honduras has been fun but I´m very much looking forward to Nicaragua.
