5 weeks in Eastern Europe, from the beaches of Croatia and the baths of Budapest to the sand dunes of Lithuania.

Klaipeda

UNESCO world heritage site?
The main reason to go to Klaipeda is to see the Curonian Spit, which is a thin strip of land that runs out across the sea. The spit is made up of giant, shifting sand dunes which are reputedly some of the largest in Europe and enough to make this a Unesco World Heritage sight. While giant, shifting sand dunes sound pretty exciting in theory and in guidebooks, in my perfectly unqualified, geologically ignorant opinion, they were pretty underwhleming. Picture some hills of sand with some shrubs scattered around on them, and you've pretty much got an accurate image of the place. This place might be worth checking out if it were more easily accessible, but as it is you have to take a ferry from Klaipeda to the spit, then a long bus ride down to Nida, where the sand dunes are. I would only recommend coming here if you really love sand dunes or if you are planning to spend 3 months traveling around Lithuania...

Small, typical hostel, but rude staff
I agree with the other reviewer. I stayed here for a few nights and unfortunately the staff is a quite rude. A brunette woman was working there when I stayed. Nothing overtly rude -- she did her job -- but it was clear that she didn't want to talk to you or help you out beyond checking you in and collecting your payment.

I'd like to think that maybe it's just a communication barrier/gap, but it's a bit hard to believe if other people had the same experience.

The rooms are basic, and there are quite a few beds per room. However, this is the hostel I met Deats and Fio in so it was worth it!
