Kyle at the Dubai Marina. Notice the new and old boats in the background
We had an incredible time in Dubai. It is obvious that the city is changing constantly and the Dubai we see when we return will be completely different. We’ve decided to spend the New Year in Abu Dhabi, so before departing we stopped for lunch at Johnny Rocket’s at the Dubai Marina where we ate outside overlooking the harbor that was cram-packed with luxury yachts and motor boats (the racing yachts and sailboats are held in another harbor). Sean spent some time walking around taking pictures of the architecture (Tom’s legacy lives on) and searching for the yacht club. After fighting rush hour traffic to get to the highway, we finally began our 90-minute drive to Abu Dhabi. Along the way we saw the Free Trade Zone, quaint communities created for government-provided housing, and vast desert land waiting to be developed for the millions of people begging to get work visas into the UAE. We checked into the Sheraton Khalidiya-Abu Dhabi and rested before he went out to celebrate Hareb’s birthday at Chili’s. Tonight Huda gave Kyle a traditional outfit and wrapped his head in the hamdnya.
