Tangier for the memories

Tangier is famous in Berber legend for being where the dove brought earth from to Noah and to the Greeks for being the land of the gods or "Beautiful People".  The Greeks obviously had never been to Miami.

The city is just as I imagined it, full and bustling.  Many people still wear the traditional ancient robes, now with a little more flash and style.

Abdul, our guide, whom picked us out as we disembarked from the enormous hydrofoil ferry from Tarifa to Tangier, takes us to the Casbah in the old city where the men sit in tiny hall closets and sew and weave like mad men to make the intricate robes.

He guides us through the markets filled with people and rows and rows of dangling chickens, headless and waving in the breeze.

We walked through the cheese market where Abdul pointed out a Berber woman selling cheeses from woven grass plates.  She was small with a green grass hat and sharp blue eyes.  She smiled quietly as we passed.

The other markets are not as odorous, thankfully, and we even haggle with a merchant and purchase a silken rug.  At first the merchant thought we were French and began to converse with us but switched to perfect English when he found out we were American.

Centrally located the Hotel Rembrandt is like a crown jewel strewn on the desert sand, or so it felt after a long days travel.

I felt very at home in Africa, not something easy to accommodate for a highly spoiled American girl used to the civilization of a big city.

The price, we thought, was quite inexpensive but we did find out we could find cheaper Hotels in area.

It was everything I thought an upscale hotel in Africa should be.
