You know a sporting event is going to be good when there are split entrances for teams, there is a metal fence seperating the two teams in the arena, and there are a number of police in full riot gear.
That’s what a typical Hammerby vs. AIK (two Stockholm city teams) hockey game is like.
I was on the home team’s side - Hammerby. One whole section of the crowd was devoted to shouting and chanting expletives to AIK for the entire game. They were louder than a Wizards game crowd after Arenas made his game winning threes.
The stadium was pretty small (perhaps 50 rows or so) and I was about row 14. The play was a lot slower than the NHL (if it still even exists now) but the general atmosphere was what took the cake. Tons of waving flags. Screaming fans. Stands painted in the team’s colors.
After a 3-0 victory the riot police shuffled people off to different metro stops to avoid confrontation… Regardless of their efforts, while I waited on the metro platform, 5 police wagons flew by, and then about 20 fans ran through the metro who were followed by about 15 cops in riot gear, masks down, batons drawn.
I’d say all in all, it was pretty quality.
