Stepping back in time.

The plan: a 3 week car trip covering as many sites as we can fit. About 4,500 miles, and include California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming and back again. Many National Parks. It ended up over 5,200 miles, 1,800 pictures.

Stepping back in time.

This looked like a sleepy little town from a hundred years ago, tucked into a deep river canyon at the 7,700 foot level with high mountains on both sides with the main north-south route through town running right down its main street.  It hardly appeared they had even widened the street.

I guess the population is about a thousand now, maybe more in the summer.  But from the drive through you can see why they so eloquently nicknamed it the Switzerland of America.

My aunt had lived in Ouray for several years and I had never gotten to go visit here there. I can see why she liked it.
