Shiprock, New Mexico has legendary status in Indian lore.  In fact almost everyday at dusk the giant mountain seems to float away from the ground it sits on, like a real ship.   This is another of those sights that you can see from miles away and you can tell why there is such a legend.

Located just south of the town of Shiprock we found roads that led us all the way around it, if not close in some places.  This formation seems to be on private land, bordered by ranch fencing.  Climbing is forbidden.

The pictures we got lets you see why it looks like a ship.

You know, Roger, I really like the Southwestern part of the US. Seems there are always blue skies and the reds and browns of the soil contrast so well against it. Not to mention all the natural rock formations that are the real stars of the SW. Thanks for all the great pics! I'll be in Vegas April 17-20 and going to the Grand Canyon so hoping for some great weather, too.
