Shell Falls

The plan: a 3 week car trip covering as many sites as we can fit. About 4,500 miles, and include California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming and back again. Many National Parks. It ended up over 5,200 miles, 1,800 pictures.

Shell Falls

1 - A unique site, where a granite section of mountain had just collapsed out away from the rest.

About an hour and a half, 75 miles, out of Sheridan, Wyoming on highway US-14 we arrived at Shell Falls and Shell Canyon.

Sitting right off the highway is the visitor’s center.  And the platforms for viewing the falls make getting to the viewpoint pretty easy.

The canyon is very impressive. The creek takes a right turn at the base of the falls and the gorge here is very deep and the walls are straight up and down. Getting into the gorge would be would require repelling which wouldn’t be easy at all and not give you much more to see. According to the signs at the visitor’s center, there is another waterfall downstream, but it doesn’t say that there is a way to view it.

This is a great stop if you are headed for Yellowstone from the east.

Located just a short few miles east of Shell, Wyoming, approximately 15 miles east of Greybull, this impressive one hundred twenty foot falls is easy to see. Highway 14 runs from east to west across Wyoming on your way to Yellowstone. A visitor center and roadside interpretive center are at the parking lot. A very short walk along the wooden platforms brings you to a great view of the falls. Situated in a deep canyon of solid rock the falls fall freely the whole 120 feet.

If you are your way across Wyoming to Yellowstone, this is a great stop. Especially if you like waterfalls.
