1 - The Durango Train Station

Today is the day for the big train ride.

We were up early, which wasn’t easy due to a stomach problem I once in a while suffer from.  Out to breakfast by 7 a.m. and on the bus into downtown for the railroad station by shortly after 8.

Durango has a pretty nice public transportation system and the bus runs about every fifteen minutes, so it was easy for us to leave our car at the motel rather than trying to find a parking space downtown at or even near the railroad station.  After looking around last night we knew that would be a problem.  The bus provided a good answer, quick, cheap and easy.

Four trains make the run every morning starting at 7:30am and every 45 minutes another leaves. Our train was the last of the morning, leaving at 9:45 a.m. So we were there early and had time to get acquainted with a few others who were on our train.

The trip is 3 ½ hours from Durango to Silverton. A 2 hour stop for lunch, shopping, and sightseeing. Then back on board for the 3 ½ hour return trip. We didn’t get back into Durango until 7 p.m.

A long, but enjoyable ride.

Dinner at a nice Italian restaurant by the name of Mama’s Boy.

I'd check on-line before you go to make sure they would be running, even if they don't have much snow. :D

I'm so envious! We had intended to do this trip, but we ran out of time...after Rocky Mountain National Park, it was time to head back East to get Tyler to school...but the Silverton-Durango Railroad Trip had been on our original agenda. Oh, well, it gives us an excuse to go back there someday!
