Glen Canyon, Dam that’s a big lake!
July 10, 2006
Can you believe we nearly slept in? Our latest start of the day so far, almost 9 a.m. Shows how tired we were from yesterday. But today we continue our drive east through southern
Our first stop today is Page,
The visitor center invites you for a tour and a nice look at the dam, but they screen you for any metal like you may be a terrorist. They do allow cameras inside. It’s an interesting stroll through the picture galleries, the scale model of the lake, the books, and even glass wall that looks out over the dam and lake.

October 1956 began the building of the dam and bridge. It took three years to complete the bridge, but that permitted trucks to deliver materials and equipment to the site a savings of 200 miles. On September 22, 1966 Ladybird Johnson dedicated the dam. It took 17 years for Lake Powell to fill for the first time. Much of the electricity of the southwest is generated here at Glen Canyon. Tours are available into the depths of the dam, but security is high.
The lake is great for water lovers and boaters who like to try and get lost because it can really happen in this lake with all of its small remote fingers and inlets.
There is one other major draw to the area and that is Rainbow Bridge. To reach the largest natural bridge takes a seven and half hour tour by boat and includes a major hike most of the year depending on the water level of the lake.
But other than that obvious draw, visiting the dam is just a short stop and a place to take a few nice pictures of the dam and bridge.
