Suriname, once known as Dutch Guiana, is one of South America's smallest countries.Paramaribo is the capital,Dutch is the national language (although many people in the cities also speak very good English) the city of Paramaribo has many other architectural and cultural reminders of its links with the Netherlands.

Nieuw Amsterdam, Suriname

Marienburg, Commewijne

Also holiday in Suriname for May1. Luckily, i was not on emergency list to be on-call this week. The chance for me to escape from the city. I was looking forward for short day trip so as to see how Nieuw Amsterdam ( the capital from the district of Commewijne) really looks like.I missed the 1st plan for this sugarcane plantation trip by boat thru SURINAME river (wild dolphin watchin as well in the mouth of the river)

Since i will have the whole day for this trip ,I called up my COUCHSURFER friend (Cedric) to meet me up at 8am for the day trip so that he can catch up for his work at night. Its already 8:30am but i still cant  hear for his broomfiets. Had a quick breakfast. and saw Annie packin up the "meriendas" and gatorade. 8:45am, heard the broomfiets coming. At last! Cedric arrived. Head to my truck and went straight to fill up for my gasoline.

Heard from CEDRIC that it will not really be a long drive to Commewnijne District.Nieuw Amsterdam is a coastal town situated near the mouth of the Suriname river. Not really a bad road compared to MOENGO-ALBINA ( bordering FRENCH GUIANA ).

While driving, i noticed that i can see mostly Javanese and EAST indians community.

Cedric started the stories how they settle here since 1890 when DUTCH brought them here  as a plantation worker.

When we reached the NV Mariënburg (former sugar refinery and plantation), we met Mr Tikkat ( a Surinamese born Javaneses descendant). He started to work to Marienburg since he was 16yrs old. He´s a very nice tour guide and knew every corners of the plantations.

See some of the pictures that we had for this day trip.
