ridiculous thoughts...

One last note on "the land of the free"... a few of the things I noticed along the way that were interesting or different from Australia...

traffic...

  • They don't have roundabouts.  It's very bizarre when you're used to seeing roundabouts everywhere...
  • no one obeys pedestrian lights - especially in New York City.
  • they love their cross-streets - they always say the nearest cross st when giving an address, in Australia we just give the house no & hope for the best...
  • Red lights no longer mean stop - you can turn right on a red light... what is with that??

food etc...

  • No one has electric kettles!  Everyone has a coffee filter machine & then they have stove-top kettles.
  • it's true, they love "soda" - and it all has caffeine in it - Mountain Dew & Sprite etc, all with caffeine.
  • EVERYTHING is huge - food portions, cars, groceries, wine & spirits, buildings...

other stuff...

  • being from Australia is interesting, being from Tasmania is "exotic".
  • initially the first question anyone asked was always "do you have kangaroos running around your backyard?", but that was quickly usurped by "isn't it tragic what happened to Steve Irwin..."
  • I finally got used to the money, but still think it's silly - $1 notes? Annoying.  And the biggest coin is a quarter (25c) & they still use pennies (ugh).  Plus they're afraid of big bills - they don't use $50 notes, let alone $100.
