I've finally had time to come and check emails - yay! We've just had a week of pre-camp - training, cleaning, organisation, planning etc... and the schedule was completely packed so we literally didn't have time to leave camp. Today we have the entire afternoon off... because tomorrow the campers arrive!
It has been tiring and there's been a lot of work to do, but it's also been fun. And I really feel very comfortable and at "home". All of the counselors seem to get on really well, everyone in my unit is great, and the people in my department are quite a versatile bunch.
We do sleep in "tents" - but they have raised wooden platform floors & all four walls can be rolled up & down. There's also plenty of room to stand up & walk around & fit four beds in & have bookshelves & a little table.
The camp is beautiful, but all set on a big hill, and our unit is at the top of the hill... lots of good exercise going up and down to get things.
The arts & crafts department that I am in charge of is in a big old barn, and now that we've done a heap of cleaning it's looking pretty good. I've been quite overwhelmed with all the work & responsibilities I have as a department head, but everyone is very helpful and there's lots of experience spread amongst them.
We've had a couple of social events with Lanakila & Aloha Hive (boys camp & younger girls camp), so it's been fun to meet all these people we'll see around over the summer.
We're all very excited that the campers are arriving tomorrow, coz now camp really starts! It will also be good that we'll get into a normal schedule - meaning we get a day off every week and there's a few hours of free time every day.
