Day 6 ... the first day of long distance travelling

The Train station in Bangkok

Dayt 6 was spent getting ready to leave Bangkok and head to Suratthani by overnight train. We were going to Koh Phangan, one of the islands in the Thailand gulf, for a bit of sun sea and sand!

Our train wasn't due to leave until 7:30 that evening, but we had no idea where the trainstation was and we didn't know how busy it was going to be so we planned on heading to the station early and waiting there. We checked out of our hostel, and made our way back to Koh San Road .... to get some breakfast, send a few emails and pick up anything we needed before we left!

We headed to the train station about 3 o clock or so and it only really took us about 45 mins to get there, it wasn't that far ... but traffic was crazy (as always) in Bangkok!

Waited around the train station and got caught up on some reading and stuff before we got on the train!

This was the first time either myself or Caroline had been on a 'sleeper' train so we were curious as to what it entailed.
Dunkin Donute ... now this is an example of how touristy Bangkok now is!
On we get to a warm and noisy train, carriage 9, seats 1 and 2 (upper and lower bed).

It was surprisingly comfortable!! The seats were quite large and we thought that we would be able to just sit back and relax before heading to sleep later on .... ahm ... that wasn't the way it was going to be!! About 30 minutes into the journey, an attendant came around to make the beds .... it really was a fascinating process to see them re-arrange the seats and make 2 beds up in a very short space of time!

So .. once the beds were made it became a little more "unsocial" as we were sent to bed!!

The beds were quite comfortable,  but the train was very bumpy and very noisy!  Then about half way through the night some Australian started threatening another passenger that she was gonna stop the train and get the Thai police to come on and search it for whoever stole her iPod!! I think she found it herself afterwards as the arguing stopped after about 5 minutes ...... and so back to sleep we tried to get!
