Day 043: 4 hours, 4.9 kms

I picked a city about halfway down Malaysia for my next stop: Kuantan.  I arrived before dawn on the top of what appeared to be a large bus station/parking garage.

I decided not to waste any time and headed out into the darkness to explore the city, just as the first call to prayer echoed out from the Main Mosque--  a splendid structure with multiple pencil like minarets, lit up in a gentle glow…

But besides that the city looked a bit, well, plain… I hiked a little ways and then up halfway over a bridge over an enormous river…

Then, just as dawn broke, a tropical downpour let loose.  I had my umbrella, but I was still getting soaked anyways.  Finally I took shelter in an unoccupied outdoor restaurant.  Finally there was a bit of a lull, and I headed down through the still quiet shopping area and took a quick boring video clip next to a palm tree on the main drag.

Then, without having really discovered or explored the city, I decided to call it quits.  I guess I could’ve tried a little harder to unearth Kuantan’s treasures… but the clock is ticking, and I’ve still got a whole nother country to explore… so I hop on another long bus south, headed towards Singapore…
