Not many park benches in Sadao...

                Day 019: 2 hours, 3.0 kms

On my way, a friendly Malay fellow gets to talking with me--  but his English is so bad we can’t get very far.  It seems that Malays don’t generally speak English as well as the Chinese or Indians.  He does however manage to explain that the bus doesn’t go as far as the border, so I’ll have to take a cab the rest of the way…

And so I cross into Thailand… and I’m in for quite a shock…

I knew, of course that Thailand is a popular sex tourism destination, but I was prepared to see every single square inch of the town dedicated to the business of sex… brothels, porno shops, massage parlours, nightclubs with thumping tecno beats, more brothels…

After spending the first day of Ramadan in Malaysia, the contrast couldn’t be more complete.

My suspicion is, rightly so, that Sadao is like this because it’s a border town… and that the entire country of Thailand is not one enormous Sex Fair.  And the fact that there are no white people here can only mean one thing:  this town caters almost entirely to Malaysian clients.

So much for the devout Muslim image.

Now to be fair, remember not all Malays are Muslims—and the customers I see seem to be mostly of Chinese ancestry--  so they’re obviously not required to keep Ramadan…

There’s hardly a spot anywhere for me to take a clip without an x-rated backdrop… I walk down the road a little ways to a low way by the side of the road where I strum a couple of songs, then continue on my way to see what the rest of Thailand is like…
