Vienna, Austria, November 2007 Day 1
Day 1
After one hectic week of finishing all my schoolwork in time the 16th finally arrived. I had to work at the restaurant on the 15th and I got home at around 22.30. After that I still had to pack and since I was just slow I finished at around 02.00. I had to get up at 04.00 so I didn’t get a lot of sleep. We left home at 05.00 and went to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. After arriving there and checking in we found out our flight was delayed. Great start of our trip! It didn’t matter to us since we were having so much fun at the airport. Sanne dropped her flight ticket and at that same moment this guy just stepped on it and it was attached to his shoe. Manon and me we’re almost dying.. Not a lot of sleep, it was still early.. so at that point anything was funny. Sanne had to ask the guy to step aside to get the ticket but she couldn’t because it was just soooo funny. Everybody was soooo annoyed by us but at that point we couldn’t care less we just couldn’t help it! We decided to make a reconstruction movie of it later but we never got to that really. Once we were on the plane we heard about the snow in Vienna. The delay was caused by all the snow on Schwechat Airport. On the flight over there we saw all the snow and we really didn’t know before we left. We knew there had been some snow earlier that week, but during the flight we heard it was more snow than we thought. So when we arrived it was snowing, but not that hard so it was fine. At first we planned on going to our hostel by Tram but we didn’t feel like it and just took a cab from the airport. It was funny that we were just talking in Dutch and then suddenly the cabdriver talked back in Dutch J.
Half an hour later we arrived at Wombat’s hostel The Base where we would be staying. (I ended up sleeping there just 1 out of the 3 nights haha) It was very nice and I can recommend it to everyone! The rooms were nice and clean, the bathroom was good and clean. The service was great, the staff was very friendly and helpfull and we just had a lot of fun there. We met so many nice people at the hostel! Me and my friends stayed in a girl’s dormitory room. The room had 4 beds and there were 3 of us. We shared the room with 2 different girls over the days. Sophie from Australia and Lilly who was originally from China but was studying in Schotland. They were so friendly so that was cool! That afternoon we decided to go out for lunch and just explore the area a little bit. It was so cold! Unbelievable! On top of that we got lost almost immediatley. We weren’t really in the citycentre so we just walked around some strange neighbourhoods haha. Finally we found some place to have lunch. Sanne and Me ordered some schnitzel (How Austrian is that?!) but Manon didn’t want that and she ordered some children’s menu or something. We already got our food before Manon did and Manon said: Im glad Im not having the same as u guys look at all that meat, I really don’t like that. Then her plate arrived and it had an even bigger schnitzel on it than ours! The girl had totally missunderstood Manon and again Sanne and Me were laughing so hard. She ate it anyway in the end but just a little. After walking around for another hour we found our way back to the hostel. We just went to sleep for a while then. I received an sms from Stefan (my friend who lives in Vienna) about where we would meet that evening and where we would be having dinner. First we slept some more and had a drink at the Wombar in the hostel. After that we took our first trip by Metro in Vienna. It was a little confusing at first but it’s a good and easy system. Unfortunateley we just didn’t get it untill the last day haha. But that’s just us, we are not used to this kind of transportation in my country. It was very nice to see Stefan again and the four of us had a lot of fun. We ate at some Mexican restaurant and it was very nice. We also had a lot of fun and people were thinking to themselves : Crazy Dutch ppl!The staff was very friendly there too, all the people we met were so nice! After that we went to some bar and some club. It was nice but we were sooooo tired. We walked back trough the citycentre with Stefan and 2 of his friends. On the way we saw St. Stephans church and we decided to go back there the next day for some shopping and sightseeing. It was a very great first day. We were back at the hostel at 04.00 I think. You all know about my issues with sleeping but at that point I had no trouble with sleeping at all. As soon as my head hit the pillow I was gone!
