Rosario Islands - Exploring the Enchanting Isles

Rosario Islands

The 27 islands, keys and isles that make up the Rosario Islands Archipelago were formed less than 5000 years ago. Active mud volcanoes rose the submarine floor until favorable conditions for algae growth allowed the coral reef to be developed. When the sea level went down, some areas of the coral reef emerged and formed the islands.

Man has visited the archipelago since Precolumbian times.

Beauty and the beast
Yet, there is no evidence that shows the islands were permanently inhabited before 1950 when some Barú Island fishermen decided to establish an area dedicated to fishing and for growing coconuts. In the 1970s, wealthy families from Cartagena and other parts of the country began building houses and resorts on the islands.

Today, the archipelago is protected by the Colombian government and is one of the most beautiful gems of the Caribbean.

I stayed in the Rosario Islands at Paraiso Secreto for three nights.

Paraiso Secreto is a wonderful complex on Isla Grande. The place is surrounded by lovely beaches, lagoons and channels with native vegetation. The colorfully painted townhouse cabins were out-of-this-world. During our stay, we were the only ones in our gorgeous, beautifully furnished unit.

The resort’s sensational staff soon became our friends. They arranged for and accompanied us on a boat ride around the islands and a private tour of Oceanario, an open water aquarium.

They even allowed me to drag out my guitar and serenade tourists and local natives during Happy Hour (the more you drink, the better I sound).

The photos taken tell the story better than my words. I truly felt like I was living on my own private fantasy island.

Be warned; the mangrove area is beautiful, but it draws mosquitoes. However, I found that a strong Deet bug spray like Deep Woods Off took care of the potential problem.

Just writing this review makes me want to pack my bags and head back to Paraiso Secreto and the remarkable Rosario Islands.
