Just enjoying life.... in paradise....
Today we didn't do very much..... We walked downtown in Kailua-Kona.. and visited a great beach.
Kailua-Kona is a darling town. It has cute little surfer shops and has managed to retain their small town image and feel dispite the number of tourists hitting the town..... We didn't feel hurried and just strolled along the walks chatting and looking. The shops carried things that were the same but different.... They are tropical themes but different items and quality. I love Hawaiian shirts and bought 3!
I enjoyed the art shops. It is amazing that people can paint and make it look like a photograph... the attention to detail is incredible. David and I particularly liked one artist's works in a little room. I thought we were about to invest in it... then I discovered he loved the almost black and white picture of a moonlit island scene and I loved a daylight jungle flower scene. Differences like this cannot be negotiated. We both loved what we loved and moved on... We both enjoyed the fish in the water scenes but it wouldn't really fit our house.... some of them were tens of thousands of dollars. So they were also really out of our price range too.... unless we wanted to get a second on our house.........

It took a long time for the waiter to decide to take our order and quite a long time to get the drinks and food after we ordered....Ray and Linda asked for water three times before they finally got it.
I ordered an appetizer of 3 cheeses, fruits and nuts... Ok we are in Hawaii.... It should be good, Right? The $14.00 dish consisted of 3 wedges of cheese of dubious quality ... the wedges at their largest were one inch. Piled on top of the cheese in the center of the wooden platter was about 1/2 cup of almonds and about 6 slices of green apple. That was it... for $14.00. It was insulting! A five year old could have put together a nicer looking and more appetizing plate. I was so mad I forgot to get a picture. THAT is mad for me!
The drinks were pretty but very poor flavor. It was obvious that they did not use fresh ingredients and had not used alcohol.... We all ordered different types of margaritas (mango, berry ....) The kicker was they cost $8.00 each....
Please take our word that it was a waste of money: four drinks at $8.00 each and a $14.00 plate... yikes.... I cannot reccomend this lackluster restaurant...... It has a view but there are other restaurants with a view that have good food and service in the same area.

One mile down the path was a small restaurant. We walked past it onto a bridge. We could look down into the water and see the fish that were being raised. They were about 12 to 18 inches long. We couldn't believe how huge and fat they were. They were being raised in one of the restored Hawaiian fish ponds. It was great to see how well they were doing...
The beach path had access to a beach by the restaurant. Most of the path followed the lava beach. It was not permitted to leave the path as it was an ancient archeological site. The site contained the waiulu which is red lava with cracks and caves which contained potable water. They were considered sacred and ritually protected.
The area also had the ala loa which is the sacred path. The path linked settlement areas. It linked from kealakekua bay to kawaihae. The path was also (one section) where a processional at night honored deceased spirts. Signs requested walkers not to disturb the rocks on the sides of the path.
When we walked back we walked to a beach that was close to the parking lot ... there were quite a few turtles sunning themselves. We got some great shots.
