Following Highway 270 along the northwest(Kohala) coastline you will find a beautiful and less developed area more reminiscent of the small towns which developed when sugar cane production was the primary employer. When cane production died, so did the economy in the small communities. Hawi is an example of a quiet rebirth occuring with small local shops,galleries and restaurants developing in mostly existing buildings. There is a tourist trade, but the numbers are much smaller and remind a visitor of a "slower time". Everyday life is not disrupted and a pleasant conversation with residents is just a smile away.
You won't go much further since the highway ends a few miles away,after you pass through Kapauu'at Pololu Valley Lookout. The beach is accessed down(and therefore back up) an approximately 1/2 mile trail. The Kohala coast is not for those seeking only quick access to beach and drinks.For those willing to move a little slower and enjoy the people and sights it is deserving of, at least, a full day of your time. We expect to stay over the next time we return.
