A Little Further Than Expected
On this day Micha decided we would go to a town local to Kassel called Eisenach. He said he'd thought of going somewhere else, but that it was too far. I eventually got it out of him, and he said "I was going to take you over the Czech border so you could add another country to your list..." and of course, I encouraged this idea, because it sounded exciting, and I'd get to tick another country off my list. So, we drove...and we drove...and we drove...I tried to navigate using Micha's road atlas but I've not had much practise in navigation in general let alone on the roads, so I wasn't very good.
As we went further east [heading towards the border via Chemnitz], the weather deteriorated. It was pouring it down with rain, and the skies were very dark, making for dangerous driving conditions that Micha worried about.
When we reached the German/Czech border, the border control there asked to see Micha's ID, and mine. When he handed my passport over, the guard kept asking "is she really English? A real English girl?" Micha and I found this quite amusing. I guess they don't get many English people trying to get into an Eastern European country with a long haired German....Once past the border, all we could see for a long time was flat land with the occasional garage selling bootleg football shirts and the like. Not long after we crossed the border it got dark, and trying to find Prague in the dark was interesting. We stayed off the motorway because you have to pay to use it.
Even when we found Prague, our next task, having not planned this forray into another country, was to find somewhere to stay the night.
In the end we found a tourist information place that had probably just closed, but luckily someone was still in there and let us in. We got a city apartment for €50- and I guess the guy gave it to us for that because we said that was our budget and he wanted to make as much money out of the foreigners as possible. We made our way to the apartment block eventually, which was quite spooky inside. The apartment was really nice though, worth what we paid I'd say. We dumped our stuff and decided to go for a walk around night time Prague. After having a look at the city lit up at night, we decided to find a pub. I asked for vodka and coke, and Micha got a random beer. What shocked us the most was the prices, and how much you get for your money. My vodka and coke was something like €1,20 but I got an entire glass bottle of coke, and half a glass of straight vodka. That is INSANE. That would be at least £3.50 in England, yet I paid the equivalent of about 95p...
After a couple of drinks we went back to the spooky apartment block and went to bed. I imagine Micha was particularly exhausted having driven SUCH a LONG way.
