Rob Roy Glacier

Only a bit more than a week has past and I've already experienced so many things.....

In Wanaka I did this walk to the Rob Roy Glacier which was quite hard as it was going up and up and up.... 2 hours!!! I'm not used to that at all but I managed to do it and I actually doing quite well!! However, my knees were hurting terribly the next day. I think they just have to get used to it....

A couple of days earlier, I decided to change my plans (I wanted to go to Queenstown next) and went to Dunedin. Dunedin is a really nice city all built in a steep hill. As it has to be, I choose the backpackers right at the top of the hill so I had to walk all the way up with my havy backpack....good exercise....

I really like the backpackers (Elm Lodge) and I met a lot of nice people there. One of them was a Taiwanese girl which was planning to go to the Catlins as well (that's the costline south of Dunedin). As we both thought it's much to expensive to go on a tour we decided to hire a car for one day together.

So the next day, we went to organise the car and in the afternoon I did a tour to the Otago Peninsula. First, we went to the Albatross Observatory. As the Albatross were all nesting and raising their little chicks we could not go close but still it was really impressive to see them flying. They've got about 2-3 meter long wings!!! After the chicks learned how to be an Albatross the fly of and don't touch land for 6 years! Isn't that fascinating!!! Then they go on land and you can imagine, as they have never used their feet during 6 years they have to learn to walk again which obviously look like they are drunk.

...Well that was a really interesting stop... Next stop we did at a penguine place. The Yellow-eyed Penguine only lives in New Zealand. It was actually their nesting time as well so we saw a few chicks. They are all fluffy and very sweet! We could also see how one of the Penguine was on its way home. He walked right close past as......we were all really excited!!

The next day, I think it was Friday or Saturday....I drove with Lan along the coast to Invercargil. We saw a lot of waterfalls and some amazing places at the coast. One was the most southern point on the southisland of New Zealand. It was so windy we had to hold on to each other. We were laughing the whole time because it was somehow really funny to walk against the wind.

On Saturday, I belive, I packed my backpack and went to Te Anau.

Dunedin Railway
I originally wanted to do the Kepler Track which is a 4-5 days walk in the Fjordlands. But more and more I had the feeling that I couldn't do it. So when I arrived at Te Anau I was really pleased I decided not to do it. There was a lot of snow on the mountains on which I should have walked across..... Furthermore, it was terribly cold!!! I was acutally freezing and had to buy a warmer jacket....

I went for a shorter walk and planned my further travels on the next day. I booked a Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound Cruise.

At 9am, on Monday, I was picked up and we drove to Manapouri. There we jumped on a really small boat to cross the Lake Manapouri which took as about an hour. Then we went by bus to the Doubtful Sound and on the next boat. We spent about 3 hours on the boat and it was quite nice and interesting to see this Sound.

Otago Peninsula
We were really lucky with the weather! Most of the time it is raining in the Fjordlands but this day the sun was out and it was not raining at all!!

Today, I went to the Milford Sound. It was raining the whole time but acutally, that was really really good. We saw hundreds of waterfalls and it was sooooo beautiful!!! I'm really glad it rained! A lot of people I met said they found the Doubtful Sound much better but I personally think the Milford Sound is much more beautiful and special! After the cruise I went by Intercity bus to Queenstown. The backpackers I'm staying in is really cool and I already met some nice people. I think I'm gone stay here for about 3 nights and then head to Franz Josef.
