Fortaleza is a sprakling city of 2 million inhabitants, visited by lot's of tourists. It is not so populated as Rio of Sao Paulo, but there is a lot to do there. Fortaleza has a large beach, a boulevard, many restaurants and a big shopping centre. It also has some poor areas, just like any other Brasilian city, and were it is better not to come to. In 2003 Fortaleza played in het highest Brasilian division, so we could visit the match Fortaleza agianst Gremio (2-2). If you have the chance to go to a professional match, it is a party! Football is everything in Brasil, and the match was visited by 80.000 people (that's something different than a match of our local FC Den Bosch!). Fortaleza now plays not eny more in the highest division. Another popular team in Fortaleza is SC Céara.
Fortaleza is founded by the Dutch, and is named after the Dutch fort Schoonenberch. And it still has some colonial buildings in the centre. The fort (what left of it) can still be visited, just like the big catholic church and lokal market in the middle of the city. The best beach is in the east of the city, and best way to come there is the taxi or the cheap local bus.
