Paris is Heaven, day two of the meet-up

On the first day of the meet-up we took a cruise on the Seine and were only getting a glimpse of the sights. Today however, we ventured out to see the highlights of Paris from up close.
Museé D’Orsay, was first. The museum is housed in a former train station, and a beautiful one for that. It boasts an impressive collection of sculptures and paintings, mostly by the world’s most renowned artists. Rodin, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Monet, Vermeer, just to name a few…
Unfortunately it is forbidden to take photographs inside the museum, so I had to sneak out a few shots :)
After the museum it was on to Notre Dame, the well known church ‘Our Lady’, where supposedly Quasimodo lives.
I was taken aback by the mass tourism and by the commercialization of the church. Did you know there are gift shops INSIDE the Notre Dame??? If my catholic upbringing serves me well, I remember the story about Jesus kicking the hustlers and traders out of the church…
Oh well, it’s a pretty church; colourful, abundant, lavishly decorated, but not my cup of tea.
Speaking of a cup, after leaving the Notre Dame we set out for Angelina, for what apparently is the best hot chocolate in the world. I didn’t have any, but I did have their signature chestnut cake which was sublime.
With our stomachs filled, we went to the Montmartre area, the neighbourhood with all the struggling artists and of course, the Basilique Sacre Coeur, the Sacred Heart Basilica which stands proud on a hill top overlooking Paris. For the first time in my life I went inside. After all, I was playing tourist on this trip. :) Compared to Notre Dame, I liked Sacre Coeur a lot better; less commercial, more devotion.
After all of this heavenly sightseeing, it was time for something more down to earth. We walked around the neighbourhood to see what’s on the minds of today’s artists. While roaming the streets we found a great little café to rest our weary bones and enjoyed a drink or two :)
After that, I said goodbye to the group for a while because I was meeting up with my friend again for dinner. I only rejoined the group later at the hostel, for which a review can be found below.
